I would only put a male and female Betta together if i was experienced in their keeping and care, and you planned on breeding.
However if the female is not ready to breed the male may kill it whilst trying to get her to breed.
Spawning with Bettas can be quite aggressive.
Best of sticking with one Betta in a tank that size. (Betta Safe then sorry)
