This is my first time doing it, but I'm currently using the shrimp method to cycle my 10 gallon. The ammonia is steadily going up, so it seems to be working well! I just tied a shrimp into a piece of fabric so it's more contained, and less mess.

No it doesnt as long as it can fit in your filter and then you can eventually replace it once your tank is cycled.

I put the shrimp in a tea bag--this saves you some of the clean up and the disgusting view of rotting shrimp every time you look at your tank. :)
