White scales behind beard?

Hi all,
my Veiltail recently (overnight) has his regular black scales turn white behind his flaring gills/beard. Does anyone know what this is? Could this be due to stress? I recently put a new filter in, as well as an airater. He's in a 10 gallon with Guppies and Otos. (He isn't fighting with any of them.)

Thanks,
-Josh

hmm. It could be that he's just marbling. Make sure the filter isn't too strong, and that the airator isn't too bubbly. Bettas like nice calm waters.

If you just put in a new filter, you might be having water quality issues--did you transfer the old filter media to the new filter in order to preserve the bacterial colony?

@Adastra Unfortunately, no. But the tank was fairly new anyway (~2 weeks). Should I add some Dr. Tim's do preserve it?

Adding Dr. Tim's won't hurt. It can only help and says specifically on the bottle that it's impossible to overdose it.
