Talking New Betta with a new owner

I just got my first ever fish yesterday - a reddish crown tail. He has some iridescent blue on his body and darker tips to his fins. He was smaller than the other bettas they had but hopefully he's just young. I have him set up in a 2 gallon plastic tank with 3 live plants and a light, and thermometer, ammonia gauge, etc for monitoring his environment. He is swimming around quite a bit, and likes to lurk near the plants. He has been spitting out his pellets but I think I saw him eat a bit that fell off. I'm excited as I have never had a fish before! So much conflicting advice out there for bettas so I have been reading many many posts on here trying to learn so my little guy can be healthy and happy. I named him Samurai, Sam for short.

Congrats! He's a cutie. Mine spits out his pellets too sometimes, then goes back and eats them,
so worries. :)

He ate 2 bloodworms! He kinda stalked them for a while then snuck up on them and eventually attacked. Pretty funny hunting behavior. I'm going to try the pellets again tomorrow.

For a while my betta spit his pellets out, when I first got him. Once he got used to the home he was okay

I think flare is when they puff out their fins to make themselves look bigger and more fierce
