betta nipping at his own fins

i saw my betta nipping at his own back fins. i guess he thought it was another betta. couldn't he feel that he was nipping at himself, or are there no nerves there?

Some bettas bite their tails just for the sake of it (like we crack our knuckles or bite our nails). He may be stressed or bored as well, or if he has a long/large fin he may feel that it's too heavy. I'm not sure about the nerves, but I'm sure it can't feel that great.

I've got a fellow that started biting (I think, haven't witnessed it but his tail has been losing chunks bit by bit) as well.

I recently switched him out so that he's in a divided tank with another betta across from him. They've been flaring at one another quite a bit, so hopefully that will entertain him enough that he doesn't keep biting and it can grow back.
