Question DIY Sponge Filters?

Has anyone here made their own sponge filters? Or an otherwise simple home-made filter?

This is the filter I am currently using in Canaan's 2 gallon hospital tank: http://www.petco.com/product/3199/Pe...FishFC_Filters

Whether it's working, I have no idea, the outflow is outrageous (huge air bubbles), so I have to adjust the airline tubing flow to make the bubbles not so big.

However, Jericho and Joppa, my other two newest sick betta's, are in 2.5 gallon hospital tanks with no filter. I like my tanks to have some mild filtration, even with water changes. So I'm thinking about making a sponge filter, if I can find some idea's.

Oops, not paying attention and I posted this in the Betta Care board instead of the Aquarium and Accessories board. Can it be moved to the proper board please? Thanks!
