Well, I had moved my fish into his hospital tank and began treating him for a bacterial infection. When I came home today I noticed that he was extremely bloated and had begun to pinecone :(. The medications that I used to treat his infection (maracyn and Jungle fungus eliminator, along with a salt bath) are also used to treat dropsy. However, at this point it seems as though his kidneys are failing and that I may not have caught it earlier enough. I have lowered the water level in his tank to give him more access to oxygen. Any advice on treating dropsy? From everything I've read, once it reaches the pinecone stage there is usually no point in treating it. Poor guy....he seems to be in a lot of pain. I'm not sure what caused this, as the water parameters were normal. However, I did get a new filter cartridge, and I had taken my old cartridge out for a few days (it had sort of fallen apart) while continuing to run the filter, so it's possible that something happened then to make him sick.
