I'm currently cycling a 40 g, and thinking what to put in it after it's done. I definetly want some zebra danios and dwarf gouramis.....but what other fish could be compatible?
well, how many of each are you going to get? Danios are schooling fish (and by themselves or in small groups aren't really too entertaining), I don't know much about gouramis though
OK, this is my plan:
5 zebra danios
5 black skirt tetras
4 dwarf gouramis
3 kuhli loaches
3 african dwarf frogs
1 otocinclus
1 swordtail
Yes my tank is filtered and heated
I dont think Ill have any issues with the temperature range if I keep it at 77* I know zebra danios are meant for 64.4-75.2, but they'll adapt. The only issue Im concerned about is the gouramis are mildly aggressive, or so everyone tells me....?
I've read that they can be aggressive too, become territorial.
From what I've read, otos actually like being with others, like group of 3 or so. And are also frequently mislabled chinese algae eaters are sold as otos (so make sure you get otos :P)
What kind of substrate do you have for the loach? I've read that sand or smooth stones are best, no sharp aquarium decor (though that is basically true for all fish anyway) so they don't hurt themselves.
Swordtails are schooling fish too, suggested that one male and three females together. I guess they're jumpers too :P according to a breeder of them at least.
I just did some research on dwarf gouramis and it is suggested that you keep 3 females and 1 male so they only focus on each other and don't get aggressive, and you're right about the swordtails, but are you sure otos like being with others?
Seems like your all set, but just a couple things to think about...
Be sure you REALLY know how to sex Gourmais before you get them(2-3 females and one male is a good ratio, BTW)....some can be difficult to sex, especially if you get them as juveniles.
What type were you thinking of? Just so you know, your not going to find female Dwarf Neon/Powder Blue/Flame Gouramis in stores.....they only sell males because the females aren't as pretty.
If you really want Dwarfs, go with Honeys....hardy, peaceful, and very beautiful, IMO. And you should be able to find both males and females.
Another options is Pearls...they're not dwarfs, but are more on the peaceful side. You could do 2 females and 1 male and it shouldn't be a problem.
Best of luck ;) Be sure to post pics of your progress!
