Question 100% water changes IF you have a

planted tank with actively growing plants & no filter? Is it necessary to do 100% water changes in those circumstances?

In my planted tanks with no filters I just do 50 % water changes as you dont want to disturb the plants also you dont have to do as big of water changes as the plants feed of the ammonia in the tank so with the plants feeding off it theres not as much of it in the tank.

depends on how many plants you have and how big the tank is.

Thanks so much for the replies! Have 3 or 4 five gal. tanks & 1 ten gal. tank I want to try this on.

How often do you do your 50% water changes, weluvbettas?

What kind of plants?

As posted-depending on the species of plants, numbers and stocking-100% water changes are not needed-you don't want to disrupt the roots-often you don't even want to vacuum the substrate too much either so the plants can use the mulm for food-

In active growing heavy planted tanks water change percent can vary

Java fern, java moss, ancharis, moss balls, small swords, bacopa, duck weed and I am seriously considering trying some frogbit.

I am going to go ahead and try it - the worst that can happen, I figure, is I will have to put the filters back on. :)

OOPS - forgot to add guppy grass as well.

I am ONLY trying this on some 5 & 10 gal. tanks with only one betta in each (no tank mates). I have a couple 3 gal. bowls with heat & small internal filters & those I will leave filtered even with the floating plants that are in there!
