It shouldn't be much of a problem I suppose, since it's safe to drink from the tap.

Just because your water is safe for you to drink doesn't mean it's safe for your fish. Heavy metals, chlorine, chloramines and heavy metals can and will kill your fish. Water conditioner isn't expensive, and you MUST use it if you don't want a dead Betta.
