You dont have to watch him constantly. Just glance at him every now and then t see how he is doing..

one thing: make sure you treat him with the aquarium salt FOR NO LONGER THAN TEN DAYS less is recommended. long term exposure to salt can cause organ damage to your betta. after you take him off of the salt, keep him in regular, VERY CLEAN water for another 10 days and then you can start over.

IF he rips off his whole fin, he'll have trouble swimming, get him in shallower waters, and treat lightly with aquarium salt.

Before he does that, keep him entertained. Put a ping pong ball in the tank if necessary, play chase-the-finger with him, add interesting objects (like plushies or toy models or anything he probably hasn't seen before) around his tank, and change what is outside of his tank every day or so. Do whatever you need to do to keep him occupied and happy with his mind off tail biting.

I agree with what JKfish said, I would personally try my best to amuse him or get him interested in something, maybe change around the deco's in his tank ^^
