Yes, if you cut the rhizome in half it will be fine. the rhizome is the horizontal part of the root that should NOT be buried.

Ok, good! Looks like I've did leave most of the horizontal part exposed, so at least that should be ok. I probably will split it into pieces after it starts to look a little healthier.

Will my poor moss ball recover?

The very small mystery plant attached to the Java Fern may be a baby Java Fern plant. Java Fern propagates by a new growth splitting off the parent plant's rhizome and leaves. If the leaves of your Java Fern turn brown, they are going through reproduction so don't remove them. Your little hitchhiking plant may very well be a sign of a healthy plant.

Ooh! Maybe he is a Baby Java! :) His leaves are curled and shaped a little bit differently, so I'll have to wait and see if that's what he is for sure or not :)

Gosh, I'm calling the Mystery Plant a "he" and have given my moss ball a nickname already O_o
