55 gallon goldfish tank

So, I have a 55 gallon tank with 4 goldfish in it. I've been thinking just now that I should get some live plants in it for them (I started that tank when I was a wee little beginner :P so I didn't have or want live plants). Can any plant at a petstore be used in a cold water aquarium? The water isn't heated at all (the crappy pre set heater doesn't do squat). I realy like the swords I have in my betta tank, and would like to put some in there (if they could handle the cold?) or maybe something flow-ier LOL

Ideas, suggestions, answers? :P

Sorry to say this but goldfish and plants = BAD!
Goldfish will munch on any plant you put in really they might leave some alone but they will destroy most plants.

Well I wouldn't really mind them munching on them :P Afterall, goldfish are pond fish, and I'm sure most ponds have plants.

Yes but the problem is there gonna be gone the next day. I think you should just get silk or plastic plants. Plants in ponds grow so fast that there is always a supplyof them . In a aquarium they dont grow as fast.

I'm really set on trying some live plants for my fish. Like I said, eating them really doesn't matter to me, I understand that if a plant is eaten, it is dead lol. I'll try some of these harder plants :)

Try water onions. They're supposedly able to hold up to nibblers and they get really tall.

Thanks for the tip :) I've actually got a water onion bulb growing in a 1.5 gallon pond snail tank (figured that'd be the best place to grow out plants), maybe I'll take that home when it gets big enough :)

You're going to want to get plants that are tough to uproot and not very appetizing--anubias have rather thick leaves and goldies tend to leave them alone. Densely rooted and deeply planted amazon swords might work, too. I've also seen java moss hold up pretty well.

What kind of goldfish do you have?

I believe they are just common goldfish :)

Are you planning to upgrade later? Unfortunately, a 55G isn't a practical longterm option for these guys. :( You might want to consider finding someone who can keep them in a pond. Perhaps if they were fancy goldfish, but commons need a lot of swimming space and get quite large, so you might want to look into it.
