Coliform bacteria in water supply!

I just got an email from my college saying there is coliform bacteria in our water supply! My fish lives in the water, could this cause him any health problems??

Thanks in advance!

I did a bit of research and it seems that it is found in the flesh of fish in some cases and fecal matter-I couldn't find much information on it as it relates to closed system and tropical fish...what scientific research I did find was how this bacteria is found in aquariums and testing products for it...not much.....but, I would think it would be fine for the fish- but you would need to be careful in handling the water and boiling makes it worse

Have your tried e-mailing the water supply company and asking them?
Sorry I couldn't help....

Thank you for trying to help me figure this out Oldfishlady, but I couldn't find much info on it either...

I can't really email the company, the school has it's own water supply and they're obviously not doing anything about it. One of my Professors told me they've had coliform and other stuff in the water for as long as he's been there... And he's been teaching since 2002! O_o

I'm just concerned about it since Victor has to live in it, not to mention that I have to drink it and bathe in it o_o

Boiling it makes it worse??

That is what I read....boiling makes it worse....
A lot of information I read too was about how it is in the water at low levels all the time and why chloramine a type of ammonia is added to water supple to kill it...I read one scientific study they did on different bacteria that occur naturally in aquarium and this was one of them

I will see if I can find it and post a link....I didn't read all of it...but what I did read was pretty interesting...love the science based info.....

Hmm, so could the water I'm adding to my tank possibly have ammonia in it?? Should I change the water more frequently?

Thank you so much Oldfishlady!! :) :) :)

Edit: I meant extra ammonia in it! :)

If you are on city water then yes it has a type of ammonia called chloramine and I am sure the college adds something too...maybe all the same as city...your dechlorinater should take care of it as long as it covers-chlorine, chloramine, heavy metal-you may need to use more depending on your levels.
