I had one of my bettas jump a divider and get into a fight with his neighbor, which is why i now have 3 tanks set up instead of just the 29 gallon with dividers. The picture below is how the betta who lost the fight looks now. He originally was missing half of his tail and had several rips and tears in his other fins and all of it grew back except for the rays (its been about a year since the fight).

my guess is that it wasn't. Live and learn. Re-cycling it now, using the dirty water from their bowls when I clean them and 25% water changes a week, I'm going to wait 2 month before I try again. Infact I may just leave the betas in their 2.5 gal tanks and get a goldfish once it is cycled or maybe start a community? not sure yet.

Thank you awesomeapril. I am thinking about trying dividers again in my 29 gallon tank but am brainstorming ideas to help prevent my bettas from jumping over the divider beyond water level

I was worried about this happening...I glued (Marineland Aquarium safe glue), the divider on all ways...now with the hood on, it leaves less than a quarter inch space between the top of
the divider and the hood fixure.
If your divider doesn't go up that far...maybe cut a water bottle(s) lengthwise, and put it over the top of it...if they try to jump, they'd hit the bottle curve & slide down? Just brain storming here..lol I may be wrong..

My brainstorming idea is to take the plastic mesh like you would use for needle point projects and rest/attach it to the top of the divider all the way across the tank with the thought that if they jumped it would prevent them from going over the divider

The way I have mine set up (because one of my fish got over to the other side and beat the other fish up) is I have more mesh spread over the top of the tank so if they jump they just hit the mesh and fall back in their side. And I took the jumper out! Here's a pic of Haze when it happened (bout a month or so ago) and what he looks like now

However, it does prove that most bettas don't fight to the death, because Haze jumped over the divider to escape Chance. So they just swapped sides. but my guess is that he knew he was the loser and tried to get away the best way he knew!
