Filter Media

Hey guys, I am going to cycle my tank with Dr. Tim's Aquatics One and Only and I was just wondering what kind of filter media I should put into my filter cartridge. Like carbon or something. I have a Aqueon 2.5 gal Mini Bow standard filter.

Thanks

I heard it is not recommended to cycle a 2.5 gallon.

Any filter media is fine, if you use carbon then you will have to replace it every month or else it will create toxins.

I heard it is harder to maintain the cycle in a smaller tank, i am not sure WHY but hopefully a more experienced betta keeper can tell you why. But people do cycle their smaller tanks so i guess you can do it.

Oh okay, thanks.

Also, if I replace the carbon won't all the beneficial bacteria get removed?

Most of the beneficial bacteria will be on the filter media and not the carbon. If you are talking about a filter cartridge with the carbon inside of it then what i would do is cut an opening in it, dump the old carbon then put new carbon in it so you do not have to throw away the entire cartridge with the bacteria on it. You do not need carbon in your tank. I usually dump out the carbon before i use the cartridge so i do not have to buy carbon.
