Tango update!

After exhaustive googling over his problems (emaciation and a hollow body, paleness, lethargy, swim bladder) I decided to treat him with kanaplex. He got his first dose 48 hours ago and he was already flaring at the back tank wall last night. This morning he's cruising around and flaring. I'm going to do a big water change and redose him. I think I'll go with three full doses just to be thorough. He still can't swim to the bottom at all. I'm hoping he's not permanently damaged but he's tough and strong. I have him on frozen bloodworms only right now.

Thanks guys! :D

After a water change and dose #2, I came home from the store to find him able to go to the bottom of the tank for brief periods! Right now he's busy patrolling and flaring. Oh my god I'm SO relieved. My baby appears to be swiftly mending.

BTW.. what does that medicine treat? Did you ever come up with a specific illness that was causing his symptoms?

It's an antibiotic (gram positive and negative) and anti fungal. I narrowed it down to some kind of nasty bacteria. I honestly considered that he might have TB or septicemia. He's lost so much weight that you can see every organ in his body through his skin. He's so hollow bodied that his head looks huge. His fins are super shortened. It's kind of like he was being eaten alive.

When I was researching causes of swim bladder, bad bacterial infections was one of the things that I read about and kanaplex was recommended for fish who couldn't ingest medicated food. I was treating with tetracycline treated food but he couldn't find the flake food and when he did he was to weak to get it in his mouth.

So I still don't have a definitive diagnosis beyond non-specific bacterial infection. I'm just happy kanaplex seems to have been the right med.

Wow, I am amazed. As of this morning he's completely back to normal. He's not swimming with his head down and his back end up anymore and he's been up and down all over the tank doing his exploring. He's even playing in the filter. He's still thin but I'm sure he'll get back to his normal weight with plenty of good bloodworms! I think I'll still dose him a third time just to do the max dosage tomorrow but wow, what a change. Kanaplex is my hero!
