What Fish Can I Put In My Divided Tank?

Right now I just have two bettas that are each in their own one gallon tank. I'm about to upgrade to a 10 gallon divided tank this weekend and wanted to get some tank mates for each betta. Are any kind of short finned tetras okay and how many for each 5 gallon section is okay?

Unfortunately, in a divided tank, there really aren't any tank mates you can get aside from shrimp or a snail. If you didn't divide the tank, you could try ONE betta and a small school of fish (5 to 6 of the same species), but 5 gallons is really only enough for your betta and small invertebrates.

Possibly try out some ghost shrimp. A few on each side would be ok. They have a small bioload and are cheap incase your betta decides they are a delicious snack. Make sure they have some hiding places such as a cave or tall plants.

It would probably be a good idea to get some tall plants to go along the divider anyway. This way it breaks up the line of sight between the bettas. This will discourage constant flaring.

I've seen other tanks that have one betta and 2-3 tetras and they were 5 gallon tanks so why wouldn't think be alright?

Because, unfortunately, people put random tankmates together and don't even consider the bioload.

You must also consider swimming space. Tetras and other schooling fish are very active. They need a lot of room to explore and exercise. Some individuals claim that a 10 gallon is not enough space for a proper school, let alone a 5 gallon.

Therefore bioload and space requirements must be considered.

Any tank mates wouldnt be the best idea,.... Maybe you could split the tank into 3 and purchase another betta and each betta will have just over 3 gallons. And maybe a snail in each compartment ?? |Thats what i would do....

Do you have any idea how I'd go about doing that without buying commercial dividers? The dividers for the ten gallon tanks are 10 dollars a piece.

You can make your own, I'll try to find the thread for them. They cost like $0.20 to make.
