Heater Suggestions?

My boyfriend said that he would get me a new tank for our anniversary, all I gotta do is pick one. I'm leaning towards getting another 20g long tank and dividing it since my other 20g long is currently housing our baby corn snake. I'll also be gettnig a flourescent hood for it so that I can put live plants in it. I'll be dividing it 4 ways and will be moving my two plakats into two of the spots. I have a sponge filter from my previous attempt and all I need is a good heater. The last one I got sucked and didn't heat the water at all. So if anyone has any suggestions as to a good brand or type, I would be very appreciative. :)

What was the brand you had last time, just so you we don't mention it to you several hundred times ;)

It was a Tetra Whisper Heater for 10-30 gallons.

Okies...

Mine is a (I think) therma flow "PC" (no idea what that means) heater that's really old. It works well and I got it used with my 20 long. It's not submersible though, so you do have to keep the water level at a certain height for it to work well. And my sister has a (Marineland?) Stealth that's been working for about five years, although I've heard horror stories about some of the newer ones. I can't get to the one in my breeding tank right now so I can't tell you what that one is. Hope this is at least a little bit helpful lol...

Just make sure you get one that can handle the 20 gallons.

Rule of thumb is 3 - 5 watts per gal. so that would be 60 - 100 watt heater. I'd probably go with a 100 watt heater if it were me. Hope that helps! :)

Thanks for all the input guys! I won't be getting it until after Thanksgiving, but this has certainly helped me get a good idea of what I want. :)

Is a 50 Watt heater too much for a 2.5 gal or is it ok? thats the lowest the LFS had.

No, it is three to five watts per gallon. So, you would want an 8-12 watt.
