Well..well

Well, what can I say. This is the second time I have bought 2 females only to find out that one is a male.

The pics below are not great but I had to show you all. Last month I went to our local fish store, I wanted 2 females. In the tank was the one that reallys stood out, the blue was so vibrant in color compared to the rest of the fish and it seemed to me the head of the tank too. They were very very young and small so believing they were females yep I thought they were. I would like to take some better pic using natural light as these do not do the color of this fish justice.

The past few days I have been watching this fish in my 46 gal tank. It sometimes chases the other fish whom is a female for sure but does not hurt it at all. It has just started the flaring thing and all, I noticed the tassles as I call them getting longer than the other fish.

So tonight I decided to take some pics of my female to show you all LOL

Would love to know what kind of a male this is and would it be a plakat?

His home is actually a 46 gal bowfront tank. I just use this bowl to take pictures non of my bettas would be kept in a bowl this size but I like it to take pictures with. Would prefer it to be square instead but this will do. So no he is not kept in this bowl....

Can you tell me what kind of tail he has?

He's a pretty plakat boy!

lol that's exactly how I ended up with Rikku my male PK.

The things to look for when spotting a male are longer ventral fins, a larger more sail-like dorsal fin, a "beard" when he flares, and the lack of an egg spot on his belly. a female will have a smaller dorsal, shorter ventrals, no beard, and a little white spot on her belly.

Oh, sorry lol, didn't read the description very well. XD

He looks to me like a traditional PK. (The tail.)

Thanks for the comments and replies.

Its funny that these plakats are being so commonly mistaken for females when sent to the stores. I never really looked that good when I went to buy the supposed two females. This is the second time this has happened but the first time I knew that the betta at the time was a mistaken id on it and was pleased to find the great find at that time.

From now on when I go and look at bettas I am going to take my time and go through all the "supposed" females, one never knows now if you would find a treasure......

He is in my 46 gal tank with my two Discus and a school of neons and rummynoses. Do you think he will be fine in there for the long run?? He seems to eat anything and everything I feed the other fish which is a variety of flake, pellet and frozen foods.

I really need to take a better pic of him as those pics do not do him justice. The color is absolutley beautiful in the right light.

Glad I have him though, I have had 3 plakats in my time including him and really love them.

Cheers......

Thank you, he is certainly the king of the tank and always at the front of the glass begging for food like he is starving....LOL
