Yeah, I'm new. Just wanted to say, I was considering a betta, wanted to make sure they really were as easy to care for as I had heard (you know, in pet stores), looked on line, and... Well, I still want a betta. But now he's gonna have a 5gal mini-bow tank, and I'm going to watch the temperature while I'm cycling the tank to know if I have to buy a heater or not. It's around 80* indoors here, all the time, which is the only reason I even think I might not need the heater. I've been lurking here for a week or more, gawking at the fish, and I will happily provide pictures once there's anything to take pictures OF. ^^;
So, yeah. Wanted to let you all know that you've saved another betta from half-gallon-cube-dom, and my girlfriend is even thinking about getting one, or dividing her 10gal... So again, hello. ^^;
Welcome! It is true that bettas aren't quite as simple to care for as many people think. On the other hand, they are much more active and have a lot more personality than a lot of people are aware of. They're worth the effort! And if you're cycling the tank, you won't have to do a lot of work after it's done. You probably won't need a heater if the temperature is very steady (no temperature drop at night or risk of a cold snap). Anyway, it's great that you did your research before buying a new pet. Looking forward to seeing pictures of your betta when you get one!
I'm going to buy the tank next month, and then I just don't feel right trying to bring a betta home in MN winter, so that'll give me some months, and I know I'm going to want to set up the tank, so I might as well cycle, plus it'll make it easier, which is nearly a requirement. I'm very excited, though, really wish I could do things faster... But I'd rather not have a repeat of my first fish... I was 11, didn't know about cycling, had a... 3? gallon or so... and I think I tried for goldfish. >< Yeah. Scaring.
Anyways, thank you both for the welcome. I'll try to stick around, though I'm not sure how active I'll be... ^^
Welcome to the forum! So glad you researched BEFORE. I did the same thing, wanted a betta and was going by what I had seen. I was actually researching what kind of plant to use in one of those plant/vase/betta things.. and well look what I found! so I bought a 5 gallon, searched for THE betta.. and now he is a spoiled boy!
I like you already (: Too many people get the betta first, wait 2-3 months, THEN research. And you're even planning ahead, lol! Welcome to the forum, hope you like it here. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. The only stupid question is one unasked, or something like that (x3). We're here to help.
Thanks again. And Jayy, that is a lovely fish/avatar. CodeRed, I promise I'll be quick to ask anything that I can't find an answer for... like, what is up with the 12.2 in your sig? >.> Two tenths of a betta? Two females?
And I already know the hard part will be not filling my apartment with fish... ^^
I know! 'Luckily' (or not?) it's a semi-small apartment, and my mates will kill me if I get too many. I already want more... and can't wait to start aquascaping... and I'm quite glad I found here, or I'd be bothering my mates by babbling even more than I am.
