i gotta vent! dreadful conditions in reptile store!!

i went to a local fish and reptile specialised store for some crickets yesterday with my mother. i havent visited that store in a few months infact and wasnt expecting anything... because i remember it being an ok kind of shop.... not brilliant like some large chain stores but a nice small shop with a very friendly owner....

BUT i walked passed the fish tanks (the live animals go clockwise around the shop with decor/food in the middle) and saw the tanks were dirty, no gravel or decor in any, a few dead fish (nothing over the limit though) and a turtle gasping for air as it had nowhere to sit on. thats when i though "hhmmmm.... thats not ideal..."

so went passed the marine fish which were in perfect condition. all clean, minded, shiny and attractive. nothing dead etc.

went around to the reptiles and TRAGEDY hit.... i felt like crying!!! they had 2 healthy adult beardies that looked happy and healthy, but a row below them were the babies..... OMG so sad..... 3 dead (a few days dead as they were decaying already!!!) a few more dead than alive (i guess they lived another few hours after i left) alot wounded (missing tails, arms, legs etc all UNTREATED!) and they were on sand substrate which is totally wrong for babies. the viv was full of poo. no food to be seen....

3 vivs held reptiles, another 5 or so were empty.

i paid quickly for a fake plant and left. when i got home i felt so guilty... i should have said something... it was so wrong not to make a comment about it!!!!

so this morning i got up out of bed and said i have to do something!!! fast. i wrote this letter which i will send off to that shop tomorrow in the morning:

Quote:
Good day Underwater World,
I recently visited your store and was shocked to see your baby Bearded Dragons. They were all in a poor condition, a few dead, a few badly wounded and malnutritioned, and I am writing to you to express my thought about this matter.
Baby Bearded Dragons have a right to be cared for like any adult Bearded Dragon; with care and a healthy dash of devotion. Every adult Bearded Dragon that is today a much loved part of a family somewhere in Ireland started off as a small baby in a shop like yours, and in my strong opinion, the babies in your shop have a right to grow to just that; a much loved family member in a household nearby.
If the baby Bearded Dragons don’t sell, please care well for them while they are in your shop, offering them a brighter future than what I have whitnessed in your shop recently...
I keep a 1 year old Bearded Dragon myself which I got as a baby and I have some experience in keeping Beardies. Baby Dragons should not be kept on sand as it causes impaction when swallowed which is fatal. A better option is newspaper, kitchen roll, rough tiles, lino, reptile carpet or even small oats as loose substrate. Enough wood to climb on to ensure the weaker babys can avoid the others. Too many hides are not recommended as babys tend to hide too much resulting in UV shortage. A meal of micro crickets every day and your babys will grow strong and happy, which is what everyone wants to see in a pet shop. Healthy happy animals.

I really hope this letter and its best intentions reaches you and when I visit in near future, I will see healthy babys in a suitable enclosure.

Regards
i plan to visit next friday and if i see no improvement i will report the shop to the animal welfare depertament (ISPCA) and hope they have more impact on the shop owner....

vent over lol.... i just had to share.... i feel so guilty and responsible for the poor things....
IF YOU SEE ANIMALS SUFFERING IN A STORE NEAR YOU, SAY SOMETHING! make a change! or if your shy, write a letter!!! i wanne visit more shops around me and maybe write more letters if i see something so bad like i did in that shop! i wanna make a change

That smilie sums up what I think. The babies are so cute! They are also my mom's favorite lizard! I always wanted a bearded dragon.

Poor Baby beardies. :( That makes me want to cry. I bought mine from Petsmart and they took ok care of them. I still feel I shouldn't have bought from them, but should have waited for the reptile show. He's very well loved and taken care of. I ended up giving him to my Step-mom when I moved out. He's 5 going on 6 years old. :D
I'm glad you wrote a letter. Hopefully they improve their living conditions and diet.

^^^ thats the problem with me too. on the one side, buying them gives them a good a good home but encourages owner to buy more and think the conditions are fine.... its a dilemma!!!

i rewrote the letter and sent it off monday. he should have it today... fingers crossed. for the beardies lol.

You did the right thing, Neelie. The shop owner should know better.
