How to start self-siphon?

Can anyone please tell me how to start these self-siphon gravel cleaners? for the life of me I can't figure it out. I agitate the cylinder completely submerged up and down, and while some water gets up the hose, it never does a complete siphon stream.

I *really* would prefer not using my mouth to start it.

well you have to make sure the tube is below the aquarium or it won't do a full flow...I just do mine w/ my mouth and I make sure to wipe it before, but I don't know if you can start it any other way....

You gotta go fast. Once water starts trickling out, keep going. It'll eventually start a full flow. It took me a while to get used to.

Yeah, the agitation method rarely works. For me the valve sticks after a few seconds and I have to start over. I've grown to accept using my mouth.

What I do is run the hose under really hot water for a minute (rinse inside and out) then only suck water into it to fill the hose about 3/4. After that just plug it with your finger and put it into your container. I haven't had any accidents doing this just yet.

The way I see it the water is probably cleaner than a lake or river but I do water changes every other day. I go swimming in lakes and rivers all the time so...

I've always had trouble with that method and refuse to use my mouth, so now I just stick my turey baster into one end of the tube and start pumping to suck in water.

I just put the tips of my lips on the edge and suck on it for a second. That usually pulls it up and gets a suction going. Only had an accident once!

Thanks for the link, Celine. I gave up on siphoning my little tank after the first taste of fishy water. That makes things so much easier.

Yeah I couldn't figure out the damn thing for more than a week - -" Then someone answered my thread and told me to suck on the end of the hose until water comes out. Just be quick when using it or else it'll get all over. The first time I used it I swallowed a lil' too much, and sprayed my cat right in the face xD Let's just say he runs when the siphon comes out.
