Ammonia in relation to Prime

So no matter how often or how much I change my tanks, they always seem to have an ammonia reading on them... I read somewhere that Prime can convert harmful ammonia into not-as-harmful ammonia and that it shows up on a test... any insight on this? e.e I'd love to be able to get an accurate reading on the tanks.

Yes, it is true that Prime converts some ammonia into ammonium but it needs amonia to be there first.

Try testing your water before you add anything, it could be in the tap water. This should also give you a base line for when you do your next tank reading.
