Planning to Breed

I've bred before, but never bettas. I worked with easy breeders such as danios, platys, and guppies. I'm now ready for more of a challenge! Plus it's a much more rewarding fish to breed; with so many identifiable traits :)

I know breeding pet store bettas is frowned upon (mostly veiltails), but what about a DT from a pet store? Will it still be a "mutt" of bad genes? I can definitely buy a breeder male from AB, but I think Harlequin is a fairly well balanced DT (from what I can see), and he's eager to breed. I know he'll be carrying genes I have no idea about... is it ok to do one spawn and cull off a lot of fry to see how they're turning out?

There's obviously a lot more to think about when breeding bettas, especially since I want DT and marble. Advice please! :)

I'd go with an aquabid betta but if you want you can get a female from AB. If you want to breed a DT get an ST female. In 2 generations you'll have DTs.

If I were you I would buy a nice pair from Aquabid, but that's just me. :)

If possible get a sibling pair of marble DT (ST female) since that's what you're interested in.If you still want to use your petstore DT, I would buy a nice marble ST female (DT geno) and breed them.

I actually just bought Dragonlady's ST marble females with DT geno this past week because I thought they'd make nice breeders, and they're super cute! So if I used them with my petstore DT I'd have a decent chance of quality offspring?

There's a chance yes. Cross back to the mother if you want more quality.
