Exclamation My poor Marcus! :(

So a couple of days ago my sister got me a betta as a birthday present. I named him Marcus He seemed pretty stressed the first two days. He wasn't all interested in the food I gave him (which were flakes) so I went and bought some Betta Pellets.
But since I got him he rarely swims around or extends his fins. He only swims around using the fins on the side.. if that makes sense. He's refused to eat his food, just ignores it. He goes to the surface of the tank for air.And just yesterday I saw he had this scratch? hole? on him. On the top of his back, it's small and white looking. He is also blue but starting to have red in his fins..? I don't know what's wrong with him
I just changed his tank 3 days ago and just now. It seems that after I put him back in his tank it's like nothing is wrong and swims all over the tank. But shortly after he goes back to being weird and remains in one spot, sometimes it's at the bottom of the tank and sometimes the top.

Is it fungus? depression? I've spend all day looking online to see what's wrong with my poor Marcus and I can't seem to find anything!

Please help my poor Marcus

You need to answer the questions in the sticky (http://www.bettafish.com/showthread.php?t=49233), but the first and most important question we need to know is how big his tank is.

So how large is it?

^^^ Agreed, and a picture would be helpful, that whole "scratch?hole?fungus?" thing is confusing, those could all be very different things x,x
Keep Marcus comfy: keep him clean, keep him warm and keep his water conditioned <3

Your aquarium is definately too small, and because betta fish are tropical fish, they need tropical temperatures (a heater is necessar) in their tank. He is probably cold, and plus, you need to do onehundred percent water changes daily.

You'll want to consider upgrading to about a 2.5 gallon tank so you can heat it properly and so that keeping up with water changes will be less of a hassel.

oh, and welcome to the forum and betta keeping :) Hopefully you'll get everything worked out. Betta fish are awesome fish and very forgiving of first timer mistakes, and once you have them in the proper set up, it's amazing to see how much personality they have.

Your issue? Your tank is too small.

That's not quite a half gallon, which means you should be changing the water every day.

Your tank should be AT LEAST 2.5 gallons.

You also need a heater. Bettas are tropical fish and require a temperature between 76 and 82 degrees fahrenheit.

Get a larger tank and he'll be happier. We'll need a picture for the rest of it.

Okay, he's got finrot as well, it looks like. 100% water changes daily, and keep him in the warmest area of your house until you can get something better for him.

If you're short on money, go to walmart or target and buy either rubbermaid or sterlite bins, there are some that are roughly about 2-3 gallons that can be heated.
