Sure, it's nice to use the lights to mimic a normal day-night cycle for the fish. Just make sure you don't leave them on for more than 8-10 hours; leaving the lights on too long can lead to algae.

So I just finished setting up the tank. Making sure everything works. I put the water conditioner in all that. Now how long should I wait to put in my betta? The temperature of the tank right now is about 80 degrees F

You might want to let it run for several hours--possibly even overnight--just to make sure the temperature doesn't continue to rise. When you're confident that the temp is staying consistent, you can float your betta (if you still have the cup he came in, that's the perfect thing to use) for 15 minutes to acclimate for temperature, then add a little bit of new tank water to the container he's floating in, wait 15 minutes, and repeat a couple more times. Then you'll be ready to release him into his spacious new home!

Don't return the tank that you first got him (0.5 gal or whatever) - it'll make a very good QT tank in case he gets sick again and you need to treat him.

Congratulations on the new tank! I can't wait to see pictures!

Best of luck with your little buddy. Sadly I'm inexpierienced with these kinds of things. But I can tell you that now you're doing things right. :)

Okay so I have a problem. I don't think he really likes the tank anymore. He's not eating any food that I try to give him. And he keeps floating at the top of the tank.
Should I put him back in his old tank??

Does he have trouble swimming? Do you have a heater in there? Have you given him time to acclimate? Some bettas won't accept food for a while.
