If your trying to cycle than never change the substrate. I've read that doing a fish in cycle you need daily 50-75% water changes. Hope your Betta gets well soon...

What is the substrate? is that all the waste settled on the bottom of the tank?

ive got a 50% water change waiting to be done, i put the new water in a bucket with conditioner and let it sat overnight

Substrate is your gravel... pebbles... sand... etc. that you put on the bottom of your tank.

ok this aint good enough fishy! im gonna do a 100% water change and clean everything! stuff the cycle. he been like this for almost 2 weeks and hasnt eaten a thing, so this is a last resort and then if he dont perk up then i'll worry about him being sick.

What does this "salt" i heard about do?

Aquarium salt is said to reduce fish stress and actually help with some ilnesses (eg ICH). I'm not sure if it's good for bettas, though -- I've heard some bettas have a negative reaction to it.
