New at fishkeeping!

Hi, I'm new to the forums and I got a betta at a party recently and have have started to take interest in keeping them.Flick is then fish in the avatar :) .Is it ok to keep it in a small container before I get my 3 gal which I'm getting awhile after Christmas?

As long as you do daily water changes with a dechlorinator, yes.

What you could also do is get a clear plastic storage bin from Walmart and keep him in there until you have your tank. But these also require water changes at least every two days.

How long is awhile? A smalll contianer would be okay. Do you know how big the container is?

There are no Walmarts in my country :) .I may be getting a dechlorinator together with the tank, what type of dechlorinator do you recommended?
So far I'm doing daily changes and feed 3 pellets to Flick 2 times daily

I'll take more pics after getting the tank :)

For most bang for the buck. Prime, it's concentrated dechlorinator/conditioner so even a little bottle will go a long way on your future 3 gallon.

2 drops per 1 gallon water.

Just got the 3gal several hours ago, now Flick is swimming in it :)

Will it be ok if i keep Flick in the warmest area of the house before I get a heater?

Also how do I tell the gender of Male/Female bettas?

Betta need to kept at about 80*F or 25* C and male betta usually have long flowing fins. Females get vertical bars and have an egg spot. If the fish in question is your avatar he looks quite like a male.

The room is about that temp, so it should be okay?

Water is typically colder than the room it's in. If your room is about 75* then the water will be closer to 70*. That's my usual experience anyway.

I'd get that heater ASAP.

Heaters are the most important part of keeping a betta (next to water and water conditioner).

A typical 25 watt or 50 watt adjustable heater will run you about $20-$30.

Some brands to consider are the Marineland Stealth Pro (or just the regular Stealth if you can find it anywhere) and the Hydor Theo. any truly adjustable heater will do though.

What I mean by "truly adjustable" is that the heater should have a knob/dial you can use to set the temperature and numbers to indicate how high you're setting it. Heaters without knobs/dials usually don't heat the water too well in my experience.
