I found an article here also that says if you use aquarium salt to treat dropsy it will kill your fish http://badmanstropicalfish.com/articles/article24.html

Well you might want to do a 100% water change. I never knew not to use aquarium salt for dropsy so I'm learning with you on this one. Or you can separate him into a isolated tank with only a gallon or so and the water change would help the dropsy and bloating to because he does looks swollen down by his tail unless thats normal for him.

And I'm not sure about him dying dropsy is one of those diseases where you can only treat the symptoms really but caught early usually you can save. I dont know how long he has been like this. I would go get epsom salt and use 1 tsp per gallon to treat him and raise the temp. But like I said I have only had a few bouts with dropsy. One in a tetra and I think one or two in a betta.

Well I dont want to damper your day by saying he is going to die cause to be honest I'm not all sure. I would try to save him and this if it does nothing else raising them temperature and epsom salt will make him comfortable.

If it is really dropsy, there is no recovery. However, there is a similar disease that makes pineconing and bloat. My male had it. I never treated him and after 3 weeks he began to eat normally, but he was very skinny. He is still alive today, and very healthy and active. The only reason I would think using AQ salt would kill a fish with REAL dropsy is because their kidney failed so they would have no way to remove salt from their system. But if they had real dropsy they would die anyway. Hope he gets better.

He appears to have pretty bad pineconing going on.......He also appears to have some kind of tumor growing on his face......Quite honestly, once they pinecone like this they are usually on their last days.....

You can try the salt as suggested, but you may want to prepare yourself for his passing on......
