What is a plant's role in the tank?

Now, it may seem like a very elementary question, but could someone please explain what plants do for the aquarium and the fish?

I know they take up CO2, give off O2, and use the waste products for nutrients. But, beyond that, it's not clear to me. What are the other benefits of live plants, besides aesthetic value? Please don't hesitate to go into great scientific detail if necessary. :)

Exactly this. They add oxygen to the water for fish and absorb the toxic ammonia and nitrates given off by fish waste - making the water safer, cleaner, and more habitable.

Well~ My answer is that ~
I) Adds oxygen
II) Removes C02
III) Eats ammonia
IV) Eats Nitrates
V) Eats fish poo and extra food
VI) Looks beautiful when done correctly
VII) They're fun!
