Styrofoam cup halves?

Just wondering, how long can I safely leave Styrofoam cup halves in my tank water?

My family bought me a betta before I was quite ready as far as decor goes. So he's in a 10 gal tank with a teeny glass turtle, a coffee cup, a heater, and a thermometer. I noticed he's being very skittish about going up for air or food-- and general will rocket up and then swim back to his coffee mug to hide. So I split a Styrofoam cup, and used tape to attach a half to the narrower sides of the tank.

He already seems to be much more at ease moving to the surface with cover. Just wondering though, how long should I leave them in before replacing them? I know people use them as bubble nest anchors. On the 5th I get paid and should be able to pick up some fake plants or find real floating ones to use for him to feel more secure.

By the way, and good low-light floaters you can recommend?
