Male may be female?

Every once in a while my male betta gets these vertical stripes like the females do. He's small but has long fins like a male, but I'm just so confused hah! Horizontal are stress and vertical is ready to breed correct?
(I tried to find the white dot under the belly but cant get at the right angle to catch anything)

Males get the "breeding" stripes too, except for them, they're "go away" stripes! Lol, one of my boys has them all the time!

I think it's usually like a sign of submission type thing when males do it. one of my boys used to switch between horizontal and vertical stripes when I had to do 100% changes for him

I know nothing about gender-determination when it comes to fish, but had to mention that as soon as I saw your thread title, the song "Dude looks like a lady" popped into my head XD
