filter necessary in 2.5 gal?

so my king betta is currently in a 1.5 gal critter keeper, and I was told by some of you that he needs a bigger tank. someone said to get a hawkeye 5 gal, but I really don't want to mess with a filter and cycling and all that. could I just get a 2.5 gallon critter keeper and do a 50% water change every week and 100% every other week? would 2.5 gallons be big enough for him? he's not that big for a king, so if 1.5 gallons is big enough for a normal betta wouldn't 2.5 gallons be big enough for a king?

It's not a necessity. You will still have to do your water changes.

Is 10 bucks worth an investment to you? Read the reviews. Only buy this amazing little filter if you have a petco nearby as the shipping charge is close to the price of the filter!

yeah, I could get that filter, but I don't know much about cycling. does it ned to be cycled? if I do 100% water changes will the filter be useless?

Unless there is infection going on in my tank killing off my fish I would never do a 100pct change.

Here is what I did with my 5, with that nano filter running.

Every week did a partial water change. Took an empty one gallon water jug and filled it with replacement water + conditioner. Let it sit for 24 to 48 hours to allow the water to reach room temperature. Then siphoned out the tank water and added the new water, etc.

Worked great for me. Key is every hobbyist is going to have their own technique. Take the ideas of everyone and incorporate something that works for you!

And no I wouldn't do a 100pct water change on your 2.5, just don't overfeed.....do not use the 2minute feed rule, worst rule ever. If I used the 2 minute feed rule on my piggy boy he would down about 15 pellets.

IMO/E-you don't have to have a filter or worry about the nitrogen cycle provided that you are willing and able to make the needed water changes to maintain water quality

With some Bettas especially the older long heavy fin male do better without filters and will have less fin issues as long as you do the needed water changes.....

It all boil down to water quality with this species and small tanks in general in my experience

If your Betta is not a large giant IMO he would be fine in the 1.5g or the 2.5 gallon tank without a filter with 1-50% and 1-100% weekly water changes, however, if he is over 3in you may want to look at longer tanks due to his length

thank you for your help scootshoot and oldfishlady. he is about 2.5 inches long. when I got him there were a few other kings, and he was the smallest. I'll try to get the large critter keeper sometime this week.
