Anything the fish can swim in and out of can be used as a cave. I've even seen some tall grass (fake) discreetly zip-tied together to make a little bower. Neat idea...

I had a shark cave from a pet store that began chipping paint. I freaked!

But my betta LOVED his cave so I stuck a coffee mug in there. I rinsed and soaked it in scolding hot water first. From what I've read if something is safe to drink/eat out of, then it's aquarium safe.

Plus I think it's kind of cute :) Great way to display my coffee addiction. And Xander likes to swim through the little handle.

Or you could make a cave out of half a coconut with a doorway cut into the side,just make sure you smooth the edges of the doorway with a file or sandpaper & make a couple of holes in the top for air to get out (you could then attach an Anubias ( low light plant) to the top with fishing line via the air-holes if you wish).
