Great Stuff once cured is totally inert I have used it many times before for textured backgrounds, its basically just styrofoam. Just be sure its completly dry before putting it in water. Not sure about other expanding foam though

Well, crap, I think you may have started another horrible project for me. I am going to blame you when my wife comes home and I am sculpturing some crazy ass cave like the guy was doing in Close Encounters with that mountain. LOL

The last time I said that, I ended up coming home with an AR-15 so that probably won't fly again.

Interesting idea. I think it'd be cool if you could do sealant around the entire thing and roll it in your gravel substrate as well as covering the top.

That is exactly what I am considering as well. Either that or layering it in Great Stuff like Creat mentioned and trying to make some interesting cave, using substrate and such on it as well and maybe an anchor point for a natural plant.
