Cycled or Walstad?

I am in the process of cycling my first tank and have been doing as much research as I can. Things are going 'swimmingly' lol. I have just come across the Walstad method and am curious as to other members preferences? What are the pros and cons for both methods? Is one 'better' than the other and why?

Go walstad! I went walstad and I am glad. Your tank looks amazing, the fish are happier, and it requires very little water changes. Usually only 2 a year! And you can grow most plants. Cycling your tank is actually BAD for the plants, because the plants compete with the filter bacteria for ammonia.

What IS a walstad setup? I hear it all around the forum, but have no idea what it is or how to set it up...

Walstad! I just found out about it too! I love the idea and I think I will transform my tank soon...
Here are two great websites for setting up a tank...

Please post pictures if you do it. =)

I Set mine up using MiracleGrow organic choice potting mix with a sand cap. I then bought fast growing plants like java fern, anacharis, hornwort, etc..... You can buy some slower growers, but make sure not to use all slow growers.

Everything I am seeing is pointing more and more to Walstad. Darn, wish I had known about this before I mucked around with stinky rotting prawns in my tank. Shame now that my tank is nearly cycled.
To switch from cycled to Walstad I will basically have to kill off all my bacteria wont I? So that the plants and bacteria are not fighting each other for the ammonia?

Yah, the filter bacteria fight the plants for nutrients.
