Strange behavior while breathing from surface?

My new pretty white PK, Anael, is doing something sort of strange. When he comes to the surface, sometimes he takes 3-5 gulps of air. Not constantly-- but when he's flaring or nibbling and spitting flakes he does it. He seems pretty active and healthy otherwise. I can't tell you if his color's faced though, as he's a white fish. >>;

Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed? N/A
How has your betta fish's behavior changed? Not sure if it's a change-- but he's been gulping a lot of air when he goes up to breathe. He looks and acts pretty fine-- but I noiced first when I was coating him to eat a pellet by mixing it with the fish flakes he would nip at but spit out. He came up, took a breath-- and then stayed up and took about three more while swimming forward. He does it sometimes when he flares at his tankmate too, but not constantly.

When did you start noticing the symptoms? Today

Does your fish have any history of being ill? Unknown, 3rd day of owning
How old is your fish (approximately)? Unknown, Petco fish. xD

I can't offer anything, as I am not very experienced, but I hope he's okay and if not that he will get better.
My guy is doing the same thing right now with the gulping and lunging forward as he does it, except his air bubbles keep coming out from under his gills.
Hopefully someone can explain the behavior and hopefully it's harmless.

I hope so too. I noticed a few bubbles coming out from the gills. It's just... I've had three other fish and never seen it. Maybe it's just an unusual behavior? I hope so. *sighs* Anael is so pretty ad I doubt I'd find another plakat like him.

I cant think of anything really he may just be controling his swim bladder but if its more then normal he may have a swim bladder problem if he is gulping air constantly
