Question Whats up with my levels?????

For weeks the levels were at 0 nitri/ate, and 5 ppm ammonia. I test today and it was 0 nitri/ates, and 2 ppm ammonia???????

Is it possible that my plants did it? For a week after buying them the ammonia never changed and I stopped testing ammonia for a week, and when I just did, the levels were waaaaayy down.

I have 5 short bundles of anarchis (One is from the fish store that we never washed off in an attempt to seed my tank... bought it the other day and it introduced 8-16 tiny brown snails...) 4 baby tropica swords, one tiny java fern, and 3 bundles of foxtail green.

The tank is 10 gallons, the filter is a penguin 100, and I put a shrimp in and took it out when the ammonia reached 5 ppm (on the fsecond day >.>) Since beginning the cycle (almost 4 weeks ago) a total of one inch of water has evaporated... not nearly enough to get rid of that much ammonia. Also, on the glass hundreds of these little clearish/whitish tiny strings are hanging. Is this bacteria? It's VERY tiny, my dad has them in his cycled tank, and I know they can't move, they're attached to the side of the tank

ANYWAYS, what the heck happened? And when can I add fish already?

No Shrimp?

Hey Baylee
What is your current ammonia source? You said you took the shrimp out... unless you are adding ammonia via another method your cycle will come to a grinding halt and bacteria will start to die. Your ammonia source needs to be constant. I started my cycle on New Years Eve and have not taken my shrimp out at all. My ammonia has spiked and is now down to near 0 and my nitrite has spiked and is on its way down. The ammonia source needs to be there for the whole cycle. Once your tank is completely cycled you take out the shrimp, 100% water change then stock.
Hope this helped
Dan

I took the shrimp out when it reached 5, but I planned on putting it back in when the nitrites started forming...
