New Fish, Old Tank

So my darling new betta passed away this morning (or sometime last night)
I barely knew him :(
He was only in his tank 2 days before passing (meaning it's generally pretty clean)
Before I get a new betta what do I need to do with the tank?

Does it require a complete cleaning/water change before introducing a new fish even though the water is only really 2 days old?


I have not turned the filter or heater off even though there are currently no fish in the tank.

What should I do before bringing home a new betta, i don't want the same short life for the next one

I think it would be best if you did a full water change and maybe rinse it out with really hot water, you wouldnt want any kind of disease staying in the tank/substrate. I am sorry for your loss and i hope this helps :(

Make sure the filter isnt too strong, a new betta will be weak from not having to use much muscle in a cup. Make sure the heater keeps the water at at least 78F. If it was me, I'd clean the tank substrate and change out the water in case the last fish had parasites or something. But I'm just paranoid =D

I am doing a full water change now and oging to rinse everything out. And yes, I definatly need to get some sort of filter baffle for the current.

Oh, and make sure the tank is roomy (preferably 2.5 gallons at least)

And don't overfeed!! A Bettas stomach is the size of its eye.

Yeah, i'm halfway through cleaning it out right now, it's a 10 gallon. so it takes awhile to do a full change, mostly when i have it in my bedroom and i have to go from the kitchen back and fourth to fill it up with a small bowl, haha.
so far its been emptied, the subtrate has been rinsed multiple times with hot water, and so have the plants.
just taking a little break now and i'll be filling her back up.

all clean, fresh water, washed plants, filter and heater back on.
what do i do now? how long should i wait before bringing another little guy home?

and should i put water treater in now and let is spool around with nothing in there for a while, or put it in before the new betta comes?

any specfic brand i should get, i need a new one anyways.
