Could it be old age?

I notice that male betta that I have had for 3 years is starting to become lethargic. When I come near the tank he still pokes out and sees what I am doing and he is eating just fine.

He just isn't swimming around as much as usually. His face is starting to turn grayish almost like a beard on him. Also his fins are starting to turn white a bit.

He just got upgraded from a 5 gallon to a 10 gallon. I keep up on weekly water changes.

I know I have had him for 3 years but could it be possibly he may be older? I got him at a local pet store where I seen that he was there for a good month before I took him and nursed him back to health.

I am just curious if it is old age or he may be getting sick. Now I am at work at the moment but what I'll do is try to post a few pictures once I get home tonight. If I find some time.

I heard on another site that white chins were a sign of old age. Abacus has a white chin too. And my mom's Betta, Finger, (who recently passed away) also had a white chin and his fins were starting to slowly turn white about a month before he died.

Sounds like ideal conditions, he is probably just getting older. He could have been anywhere from 6 months-a year old when you purchased him, and on average in wonderful conditions like your keeping him in they live about 3-5 years, with the exception that holds on for about 5-7 years.
So long as everything checks out okay(once you get your hands on a liquid kit), he's still eating, greeting you, and the white/gray bits aren't fuzzy or raised I'd say your assumption of old age is correct.

Ill try to get a liquid test kit tonight. I kinda figured he was about a year when I got him.

I guess that would make him around 4yrs old.

Well thank you guys!
