10 Gallon Unfiltered Tank

How often would I need to change the water in an unfiltered 10gallon tank? It'll be heated and have java moss back drop in it (only live plant for now) and one female betta. Thanks.

I do a 25% and a 50% change each week on mine (unfiltered). Seems to be enough.

Heck, with only one female betta in the tank and java moss I'd do a 50% change each week, with a good vacuum cleaning. ;D

with one female I'd do 1 50% change a week and one 100% change every two weeks.

remember that even with partial water changes ammonia can build up over time if there is no cycle. If you have enough live plants you don't have to worry though.

Personally, with live plants in an unfiltered 10gal I wouldn't do 100% water changes-the active plant growth should keep any ammonia produced by 1 Betta under control along with weekly partials 25-50% for the DOC's....add more plants if you add more fish or other livestock like shrimp and snails...active plant growth is the filter......

You should do a Walstad/ NPT!!!

Does the tank have a hood? If you have proper lighting you can put in a variety of fast growers like anacharis, hornwort, or wisteria.

Or Duckweed! Floaters are supposed to be great at sucking up nitrates and such.The proof will be when you have to regularly remove handfuls of it to keep it under control. But thats a good thing because it means that your water will be clean. I've been looking for duckweed/ frogbit lately... for invasive weeds they're pretty hard to find
