Unhappy What Else Can I Doooo?!

Recently I've discovered this scab looking-like-thing on the back of my betta fish, Fissy (lame name I know ). After asking around and changing his water, I went to the local PetSmart to get "Beta Fix". They said it should help the little fella out within a week. I have to give the poor guy 45 drops of the stuff a day.

Since the scabby-thing, he's just been moping around the bottom of his tank lately. He's just been laying on the bottom, literally laying down. Then, half the time when I feed him he's not interested. Thankfully, he still goes up for air, but it looks like he's struggling to breath, as in his gills expand outward more and faster than they usually do.

ANYWAY..
I was just wondering if there's anything else I can do for the little dickens..
I've only had him for four months and have grown very attached.
I really don't want him to die, and I'm afraid he might.
Fingers crosses!

By the way, any suggestion on preventing this again?

I'm not the best at illnesses, but here's my input-

Stop the Betta Fix!

How big is his tank? If it's smaller than 3 gallons, I'd change 100% daily water changes w/ a tsp of aquarium salt per gallon for ten days.

But we do need more information.

Housing
What size is your tank?
What temperature is your tank?
Does your tank have a filter?
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration?
Is your tank heated?
What tank mates does your betta fish live with?

Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish?
How often do you feed your betta fish?

Maintenance
How often do you perform a water change?
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change?
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change?

Water Parameters:
Have you tested your water? If so, what are the following parameters?

Ammonia:
Nitrite:
Nitrate:
pH:
Hardness:
Alkalinity:

Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed?
How has your betta fish's behavior changed?
When did you start noticing the symptoms?
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how?
Does your fish have any history of being ill?
How old is your fish (approximately)?

Little over 5 quarts.
Tanks at 73-74 degrees
No filter
I don't even know wht an airstone is T_T
Not heated
And he lives with a snail!

I feed him the "Top Fin Color Enhancing Betta Bits" from PetSmart
Once a day, twice if he's still hungry.

I usually change the water every 2 weeks.
I clean out the whole tank, and wash ever piece down, followed by 5 quarts of water, and half a cap of "Top Fin Betta Water Conditioner"!

I don't know the Paeameters, sadly.

His appearance is fine, except for that one splotch.
He doesn't swim around anymore, just lays on the bottom.
I started noticing three days ago, when he stopped swimming his usual routine.
First dau of using BetaFix..
No history, he's been fine... till now.
UGGGHHH.... I bought him from the store 4 months ago... so I like to say he's four months old.

Why no BettaFix?
Is it harmfully bad?!?!?

So roughly over a gallon.

You need your tank heated, around 75-80 degrees (my bettas tend to like around 80 the most.)

You need to change your water every other day at least, 100%. You're not doing waterchanges often enough- I'm guessing that's the main reason why he isn't doing so well. Also, I would feed him twice a day- 2 pellets in the morning and 2 pellets at night should be sufficient.
And I'm assuming you mean BettaFix Remedy w/ Melaluca oil? Yes, it's harmful. If it's any other BettaFix, I'd just stop using it completely. Water changes and aquarium salt should work.

As long as you get a heater and keep up with the 100% every other day/daily water changes, he can live in that tank... but it's recommended that bettas be kept in 2 gallons or more.

try getting him a heater, and at least two gallons(though they make these "betta bowl heaters" now, which heat a gallon safely). bettafix, i've heard, isn't nothing that good, but can hurt their labyrinth organ. D: in a gallon, you gotta change his water at least every two to three days. if you're on a budget, a larger Kritter Keeper(or whatever off-brand your local pet store has) is amazing. the one i use is about 2.5 gallons, and only 10 bucks.

hope he gets better! :O

I know what he has! My fish had the same thing and I am sad to say they all died. Here is a link to it:

My fish had that same looking thing on him a couple days after he ripped off a ton of scales. If you can get a heater you should! My fish sadly passed away from the illness and he had the exact same symptoms. I had to keep tapping hit QT cup near the end so he would go get some air.

Unfortunately, it's too late.
He passed away today, shortly after I came home from school.
The little fella will be missed dearly.. he was my lil buddy. ):
I'll work on getting a bigger tank and a heater before my next betta.
