Ok, so it was little Comet's first tank cleaning today. I read up online the proper way how to do it. My dad insisted on netting him and putting him in the cup. I said, "Go ahead." And he went right ahead and literally got him into a corner. It started getting rough when he got him into the net. He brought him up so fast that the poor thing flipped out of the net and landed smack dab onto the cold, hard tile floor. He picked him up and put him in the cup like, "Its all good. ."
Yeah, okay. Sure.
Yeah, it WASN'T all good. He pretty much lie motionless on the bottom of his cup. I thought, "Maybe he would swim up to the top for a bloodworm." Nope. He didn't even go up for a bloodworm. I bet some betta owners know what I'm talking about when I say "instantly come to the top." Not with Comet. He didn't eat one pellet until I got him into his new tank. Now I'm just about to feed him his last bloodworm of the day before I go to sleep. Rant over.
Yeah....I just scoop mine up with their cups. They're never too pleased about it of course, but its a lot less stressful and eventually they get into the routine.
I never pull my betta's out of the main tank during "maintenance" Regardless, on the oft chance I have to remove them for Quarantine, nets are certainly safe to use. What your dad failed to do was put his hand over the net as he was lifting it up out of the water.
Yes, no fin damage, absolutely nothing is wrong with him. I don't know if you guys have your eyes peeled on the Comet Pics thread, so I just wanted to share this with you.
I always cover the top of the net with my hand just in case I also dont go ape crazy and start swishing the net around like mad. I let them swim into it or coach them into the net I havent had a problem yet....
The little guy was just in shock which happens a lot with stressful water changes. Some people scoop them out with a cup, others will leave them in the tank, and people like me use nets when necessary.
But I ONLY use brine shrimp nets! I find the regular nets are to rough for their tails but the BS ones have a very smooth fabric on them that has never damaged their fins.
My male seemed to be happy after escaping the net. He just landed on the warm carpet. To him the net probably means death (Bird's mouth) so know wonder he was happy!
Exactly. But I don't know how mine felt, his tank is around 81 degrees with the light on so I don't know how it felt for him to hit 79 degree floor... :3
EDIT; i also use a brine shrimp net. its 3 inches. got it at pet smart for 6 bucks. the blue material is much softer. and when i don't use it to scoop him out of the tank, i use it to mix conditioner into my water change bucket. It's multi-purpose!!!!lol
