Cycling refers to establishing a biofilter, which is a special bacterial colonywhich grows in some medium through which the aquarium water passes. This sticky can explain it a lot better than I can.

Make sure you do TONS of water changes - Oscars are probably the 2nd messiest fish on the planet after goldfish.

BTW, once they grow up, I'm thinking the 55 will only be big enough for one, sadly.

I agree about the messy fish part:/ ugh and they are so destructive and powerful!:)
But i have babies, I also got them from a breeder so they are all brother and sister. ( i dont know who is boy or girl)

Is there a way? i have looked everywhere on the internet looking how to tell but i have read that its impossible.

Also i know that they are very messy and destructive with a lot of power but magnificent and majestic in many ways:)

I also used to have 2-3 oscars in my old 55 gallon and they lived 10 long healthy and happy life together. My grandmother also had them i remember their names too. It was Moonlight, Shadow, and oscar lol!

I sure don't know any way to tell male from female till they start breeding - sorry.

Well, best of luck to ya keeping them all. Guess you will have to play it by ear & see how it goes.
