Well I went through the same thing, I bought four and three died immediately due to high ammonia. After I figured out what it was and got it down in a few days, he was all by his lonesome, except for one skunk cory that was the only one the fish store had.
I ended up buying two male guppies and the neon was scared of them at first, but ended following them around because he was lonely. Well today I ended up getting him three more of his own kind and he took to them right away.
The only thing I could suggest is getting 2-3 more, otherwise he may get bored, stressed or more skittish. I also ended up getting a Fluval Edge pre-filter sponge which fits on the intake tube, might not be a bad idea with a betta in the tank so his fins don't get sucked in. It was only $2.40 at Petsmart.
Good luck on whatever you decide.
