Filter Cartridge Help

Hello all,

Been a "lurker" for a while, but this is my first post. I have the Top Fin 5 gallon tank that many members on this thread have and need to change the filter cartridge. I have been to Petsmart twice now and both times they have sold me the wrong filter cartridge. The one that is currently in there is the one that came with the tank when I bought it about 3 weeks ago (it is blue and slides in). They keep insisting that I need a tetra biobag, but that won't fit in my tank. When I told them this they told me that I must not have a Top Fin tank then, but I still have the instructions and that is the name on the instructions. If anyone knows the name/ size of the correct replacement that I need I would greatly appriciate it.
Thanks

You never ever EVER replace a filter cartridge, its restarting a cycle every time you do, which is probably why they wanted you to have a biobag. You just swish the cartridge around in old tank water every now and then, but never use water from the tap to clean it without it being dechlorinated as that will kill the good bacteria :)

Hello and welcome to the forum. Did you take the cartridge in with you to show them? Or you could show them the one in the store that you got.

Thanks for your help. I finally realized that they no longer carry it at the Petsmart around me and went to Walmart who had a 6 pack of them. The filter has a sponge which collects the "good" bacteria and I also have a sponge on it to slow the water flow down so that also has "good" bacteria on it. So far the tank looks great and I have one happy fish.

Fluval makes a white sponge filter that you can add into your filter. It works as a baffle and will collect the good bacteria as well so if you must change out your filter you have a back up system in place for the bacteria. That is my theory at least.. but I do not replace my filter, I go the swish route too. I added the sponge filter to the mix as a precaution.
