Using the charcoal from filter media...

I read somewhere (maybe here?) about someone opening their used-up filters and using the charcoal from the filter in their substrate. Anyone have an opinion about that? Pros? Cons?

......... charcoal as filter media? <:/

I know of activated carbon. Is that what that is?

Also I don't think it'd really do anything for your plants but maybe give them an ammonia source at the roots?

I'm not sure though.

Carbon or charcoal...same thing in regard to filter media....it is only good or active for a short time to start....depending on the brand...etc.....it is usually active for 3-6 weeks....I would not add it to your substrate...for one-its not going to help or hurt per se.....but it is pointless...

When I bought and used store bought filter media that had the combined filter sponge and charcoal together or cartridge type-I would cut a slit in the new filter media and dump the unused charcoal out and save it for emergencies if needed-since I don't use charcoal in my tanks and now I don't even buy filter media...I make my own filter media now....

Interesting that you make your own. You should share what material you use - I think it's a great idea.

I use poly-fill from the craft dept at walmart...the kind you use to stuff pillows and stuffed animals.....rubber bands on some and just stuffed in the filter box on others to catch large debris....what filters I do use on my tanks are more for water movement...the active growth of live plants are my real filters....
