Well...it kinda was-maybe and maybe not (not to make you feel bad or anything).....but what is important is that we learn from our mistakes, grow and move on...stuff happens.......it wasn't on purpose.....we can all learn from others mistakes as well.....the importance of checking water temps, proper acclimation etc...when making water changes...

However, depending on the extreme of the water temps-usually 5-10 degrees will not kill the fish unless something else was wrong with the fish or water....get into the 20-30 degree can sometimes kill a healthy fish...

Don't get discouraged.....stuff happens to all of us at one time or another and it doesn't make you a bad person or bad fish keeper.....

Look forward to hearing about your next wet-pet and some pics too...we love pics.....

the same thing happened to one of my fish that is dead now luckily I got him out before he died but he stopped moving after about 5 seconds and if he was in there any longer he probably would have died but I had to euthenize him that same day

I'm so very, very sorry. :(

FWIW, I had the same thing happen years ago to a fish (not a betta, though) I had had for a year or more. He was in a 38 gal. community tank and I did my regular weekly water change. Once I got done putting in the new (same temp & dechlorinated) water, he suddenly stated spinning head down and died shortly after.

He was the only fish in the tank that did this and to this day I have NO idea what happened!!!!

Thanks everyone, and no worries it didnt make me feel bad, I already feel it was my fault, but temperature shock is the only thing I can think of it being.

@Bettamaniac: Im sorry to hear that :(

@Lion Mom: Thats kind of exactly how it went down. Im sorry to hear that as well. But thank you.

I'm so sorry. Don't let this discourage you from getting another Betta, though. We all make mistakes at one point or another. =)

Fish are kind of fragile creatures on the whole. I think everyone who's ever put their heart into keeping fish has one or two mistakes that made them rethink staying in the hobby. Things happen, maybe it was your fault and maybe it wasn't, but at the very least you did your best to keep an animal as happy and healthy as you knew how. The best thing for you is to try again when you feel comfortable. Every mistake is an opportunity to improve for the next try.

I'm sorry for your loss! Could have been temperature shock, or could have just been his time to go. You'll never know for certain. But I hope you find the courage to get a new fish soon!

What was the temp of the water your fish was in before you put him back in the tank?

Thanks everyone, I feel I will soon. Just not sure when, and I keep my room between 70-75 degrees.
