Sudden sorrows

Fair though dark,
Hero stole our hearts
And brought life and balance
With her charming arts.
Lost are we now
Without knowing how
The time came
In spite of our best efforts.

I should have listened to my heart
And saved thee
With science's arts
Instead of trusting thee
To the brine
That merely freed
That gauzy shroud
To entwine thee.

I tried to save thee too late
And now cannot help but hate;
For now I cannot bear
Think I could have spared.
What did I do wrong
That I now must write this song,
That now visits pain
To Poet and Bard again.

Thy life was beautiful while it lasted,
Thou pouted when thou were fasted
And wagged thy fins in play
For pellets the next day.
To join thy brothers and sisters go,
Where the river's frozen waters flow.
Let thy ashes flow into the sea
Until one day my death returns me to thee.
